Bridges (6)

The Bridges program is JeffCo Open School's Sixth Grade. Bridges is still part of our elementary program, but supports students to bridge into our secondary program. There are two self-contained classrooms in the Bridges program, with approximately 22 students per room.

In the Bridges Program, students work to refine the skills, attitudes, knowledge and behavior necessary to be successful in a self-directed learning environment.

Bridges Trip

Bridges students are expected to:

  • Be honest and reflective of their personal, social, and intellectual behaviors
  • Be knowledgeable about what and why we learn
  • Set personal, social, and intellectual goals and be self-directed in working towards those goals (with the support of advisors and peers)
  • Learn collaboratively for the benefit of both the individual and the community
  • Work hard
  • Persist in the face of challenges
  • Contribute (give as well as take) meaningfully to the Open School community at large
  • Be actively involved in Advising and Bridges community meetings
  • Complete Bridges overnight trips
  • Complete a Bridges self-directed Voyage project
  • Document learning in a formal Bridges Voyage presentation

Bridges Overnight Trips

Bridges students participate in two big trips:

Camping or Lodging trip in September

This is a time for all the members of our community to get to know each other while facing authentic learning experiences outside of the classroom.

Bridges Camping Trip

YMCA at Snow Mountain Ranch in February

This trip occurs midway during the sixth grader’s academic year and recognizes that our elementary children are soon to become more independent adolescents. Students, advisors, and high-school leaders participate in this trip.

The Voyage

  • The Voyage is a long-term, self-directed, self-selected project that invites sixth graders to apply all of their academic knowledge to a topic they are interested in. Successful participation and completion of the Voyage demonstrates READINESS to move on to the Foundations Program.
  • Students select their own subjects to research--examining different aspects of their subject to develop essays, artifacts, and a final presentation displaying their work.
  • The Voyage is the JOURNEY: the whole process! Not just the final product.
